The Shep Resnik Music Scholarship Fund

Green Mountain Swing has established a scholarship fund to help local students with the costs of music education. All band proceeds after expenses go to this fund. With the help of independent donations, in 2009, the program’s first year, the band was able to donate $2160 to help young players and singers with their musical expenses.

The scholarships go to students in grades 7 through 12 at schools in the area where most of Green Mountain Swing’s 18 players hail from: Harwood, Montpelier, and U-32. (We hope to include more area schools in coming years.) The students are chosen by the music faculty at each school, and they may use the scholarships for private lessons, music camps, or both. The awards are based on need and passion for music. They range from $150 to $300 and are for instrumentalists and vocalists without restriction as to the genre of music favored by the student (jazz, classical, etc.).

In addition to the above awards, the Resnik Fund gives scholarships to wind instrumentalists in the Green Mountain Youth Symphony.

The fund is named after a longtime, beloved member of the band, Shep Resnik, a summer resident of the Mad River Valley who died in the fall of 2008. Shep played sax and clarinet and served as the band’s director.

How to contribute:
The fund is supported primarily by donations. Checks should be made payable to “Green Mountain Swing Scholarship Fund.” We are happy to accept donations at concerts. They can also be sent to the Green Mountain Swing treasurer at this address: Pierre Swick, 4604 Battleground Road, no. 4, Waitsfield, VT 05673. As of this time, donations are not tax-deductible.
