Scholarship Student Comments

Carrie Edson (8th grade U-32) writes:
I have been playing flute for 4 years. My other interests are reading, knitting and walking my dog. My goal for the flute is to increase my knowledge of it. One of my problems is tone. I also have intonation issues. With this scholarship I am hoping to change that problem. The flute has taught me that I have great telent. I have played at school concerts, at church and at town meetings. All the work has paid off. I love playing the in the U-32 band but I want to extend my knowledge. With the scholarship I will be able to expand and hopefully be able to do more.

Bradley Woods (8th grade, Barre City Middle School) writes,
“My life has been filled with music and I've been inspired with the sound that each and every instrument makes. I play the trumpet, but would also like to play other instruments as well. I intend to do this at jazz camp this summer. My ultimate goal is to become a performing musician and a music teacher.”

Erhan Cross (7th grade, U32) writes:
"I am interested in sports and music. I like all types of music from Beethoven to The Beatles to Snoop Dogg. I come from a very musical family. My oldest brother is a music major at UVM who studies voice and songwriting. My other older brother writes poetry and turns his poems into raps. My younger brother plays the violin and the trumpet, sings for a rock band, and is in The Young Singers Chorus of Vermont. I started studying the viola when I was in 3rd grade with Steve Owens at Calais Elementary School. I have taken private lessons with Paul Reynolds in Montpelier. One of the highlights of my viola career was playing with the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra as a member of The Green Mountain Youth Symphony."

Lillian Broderick (10th grade, Twinfield) writes:

"I am an avid musical and theatrical performer and have studied classical piano since I was 7 and voice since I was 13. In the years to come it is my utmost desire to be a Broadway performer and to star in musicals throughout my life. When I attend college, I hope to study and minor in Music or Musical Theater. If, however, Broadway calls me, I would forgo my college aspirations temporarily for musical theater. I have tremendous admiration for singing stars such as Julie Andrews, Kathryn Grayson, Judy Garland, Heanette MacDonald, and especially, Barbra Streisand. Regardless of my Broadway aspirations, I will study and perform music throughout my life."

Julian Soberano (10th grade, Twinfield) writes:

"I live in Marshfield with my mother and our cat, and I enjoy playing guitar, drums, drawing, acting and singing. Since 4th grade I have taken an interest in the arts. My musical influences are Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Hervie Hancock, Miles Davis, Charlie Christian, and Joe Pass. Attending camps such as the Vermont Summer Jazz Camp (USJC) will give me the opportunity to play with students from other schools. This is important to me since I live on a small back road and have difficulty meeting students from other schools that would enable me to improve my musical abilities. The instructors that lead the Jazz Camp are very adept, and one leaves having gained much valuable experience."

Michael Chmielewski (Harwood High School) writes:

"I have been playing mallet percussion for three years and I also enjoy playing piano, which I have been playing for nine years. I take many different music classes at Harwood, including Jazz Improvisation with Bruce Sklar, Band with Mr. Rivers, and Jazz Ensemble. I plan to continue music study through my senior year and college as well. I was really pleased to play percussion in both the All State and New England Bands this year. It was a blast!"

Lydia Herrick (Montpelier High School) writes:

"Thank you so much for the scholarship money!! I really do appreciate it, because it enabled me to go to Reveille Music Festival this year. Reveille is the Vermont Youth Orchestra's camp. It was my first year there, and I could not have imagined a better music camp experience. Not only were the coaches and other students incredibly musical, but they were very fun to be around! Each day we rehearsed Beethoven's Fifth Symphony or the Overture to West Side Story. It was great orchestra bonding, for the rehearsals were very focused, but they were enjoyable as well! Each day we also had an evening activity of some sort. The evening activities were so much fun. Some of the most popular included the bouncy castles at Carnival Night, taking a dance class from Urban Dance Complex, and the "Auction" at Casino Night. Reveille was an experience I will literally remember for the rest of my life, and it is all thanks to the Shep Resnik Scholarship. Thank you again for this amazing scholarship."

Sinead O'Mahoney (11th grade, Montpelier High School) writes:

"I have been seriously singing since the 7th grade. When I was a freshman, I got involved with Village Harmony, a world music organization, and I have been an avid member ever since. This summer I am going to the Republic of Georgia with Village Harmony to sing Georgian music and learn the Georgian language for 7 weeks; however, coming up with the funds has been a struggle. Village Harmony has opened up a giant variety of opportunities and there's no other way I would rather spend my summer. In addition to my experience with Village Harmony, I have been involved in the choir at St. Augustine Church in Montpelier for the past five years. I have also performed in Handel's Messiah and two productions at Chandler in Randolph."

Andrew Weiler (Montpelier HIght School) writes:

"I am really interested in singing and have been since I was really little. I started chorus in 6th grade and started doing auditions for different events since 7th grade. I plan to continue singing even after I leave high school and maybe even become a music teacher sometime in my life."
